Back in 2022 my Ford F-250 pick up truck was broken into.
Thankfully, I had installed an auto security system that rendered my truck immobile and the thief was unable to start my truck, so the thief gave up and left.
My truck was parked in a ‘secured’ private parking lot and the truck-thief was caught-in-the-act on the companies security cameras, making it much easier for the police to identify the truck-thief and make an arrest.
After that costly and upsetting event, I began to hear more about car thefts and homes that were being broken into in my area, and it made me realize, that my car and my truck, which I park every night in my home driveway, were at risk of being stolen, and my home was at risk of being broken into.
After going through the stressful experience of having someone try to steal my truck, trust me, I was freaking out.
So I started to think about things that I could do around my home, that would make my family and my property more secure, and the first thing I did was install outdoor security cameras.
I was surprised about how much there was to consider when choosing an outdoor security camera system.
Though there are many good security cameras that can ‘do the job’, there is the potential to choose a security camera system that can do too much, and also, one that can not do enough.
If you are not careful, you could find yourself spending more money on a security camera system that does way more than what you need.
So, I am going to share some of the things that I considered when choosing my home security system, and I hope this helps you when choosing a home security system for you and your family.
When choosing an outdoor security camera system, there are a few key features to consider to ensure that you get the best performance and value for your money:
1. Resolution:
Look for a camera that offers TRUE 4K resolution (3840×2160) so that your camera captures ultra-clear and detailed footage
2. Field of View:
A wide angle lens (typically 130 to 180 degrees) gives you the confidence that you cover a large area with a single camera
3. Night Vision:
High Quality Night Vision is critical for capturing clear footage especially when you have low light conditions
4. Weather Resistance:
You would think that this would be standard on all outdoor security cameras, but just make sure that you choose a security system with a minimum rating of IP67 or HIGHER to resist any dust or water damage
5. Motion Detection:
Advanced Motion Detection with Sensitivity Settings that can be customized to help reduce false alarms and also to ensure that you only record important events
6. Storage Options:
Would you prefer Local Storage (SD Card) or Cloud Storage? And also consider the Storage Capacity to make sure that your security system fits your needs
7. Connectivity:
I recommend a home security sytem that offers reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection so that you can access footage remotely through a mobile app or a web interface
8. Power Supply:
Depending on your location, decide which camera security system works best with your power supply, whether that is Battery Power; Solar Power; or Wired Power
9. Other Features:
To enhance you security system consider two-way audio; smart home integration ( ie: compatible with Alexa or Google Home); Ai Powered Alerts
There are many home security systems and brands to consider, but if you start with a ‘4K’ Outdoor Security System, then you are on the right path to choosing a system that provides comprehensive coverage and delivers priceless peace of mind.
